Summiting Volcan Baru was the best thing I did in Panama. Volcan Baru is an active stratovolcano and Panama’s highest mountain. On a clear day, you can see both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean from the top.
Safe to say, my experience getting there for sunrise and watching the sun come up was a top life experience. However, there are some things I wish I would have known before I went.

Essential Info For Volcan Baru
How to Get to Volcan Baru & Boquete
Volcan Baru is located in Volcan Baru National Park in Chiriqui Province, Panama. The closest major town with hotels is Boquete, which is about 10km (20 minute drive) from the entrance of the park.
To get to Boquete from elsewhere in Panama, you have a few options:
🚗 Car: If you want to have complete freedom while traveling Panama, I recommend renting a car. Check out Discover Cars to compare rental options and find the best for you.
Just keep in mind that, while Panama’s major highways are in pretty good shape, many of the more rural roads are very much not. Watch out for twisty roads, potholes, and washboard gravel (trust me, I almost threw up going to San Blas from all of this).
🚌 Public Bus: Taking the public bus is pretty easy, but it can also be a bit of an adventure. From Panama City, you can take the bus from Albrook Station to the David Bus Terminal, and then another bus to Boquete.
🚍 Shuttle: To get to Boquete, my brother and I personally took the Hello Travel Panama shuttle from Santa Catalina. In my opinion, this is the easiest option for getting around Panama if you don’t have a car. The shuttles are spacious and the company is used to dealing with tourists.
The shuttle goes to Boquete from quite a few other desinations in Panama and Costa Rica.
However, to actually summit Volcan Baru, you only have two real options. Read them in the summiting Baru Volcano section of this article.
Volcan Baru Entrance Fees
So, the question of an entrance fee to Volcan Baru is a bit of a weird thing. If you book through a tour company (including the 4×4 tour that I took, they’ll take care of the permits for you.) If you book a tour, don’t worry about it and let your guides tell you what you need.
If you go independently, you’ll see online that you need to make a reservation through the Panama MiAmbiente Reservation System, but when you go to the website, it doesn’t work (at least it doesn’t for me mid 2026).
You can also go to the Ranger Station and register for your hike, but they have very limited hours. Make sure you do this well in advance.
Best Time to Visit Volcan Baru
When to visit Volcan Baru coincides with the best time to visit Panama. The best time to visit Panama is between December and April when the country is in its dry season.
If you visit Panama outside of this season, then be prepared for daily rains and a way more humid experience.
However, the summit of Volcan Baru is 3,474 metres (11,398 ft) high. Like I said earlier, it’s the tallest mountain in Panama. The climate at the top is very different from that at the base.
The top of the volcano is pretty chilly and above the clouds. It’s much drier than on land any time of year.

How to Summit Volcan Baru
Volcan Baru Overnight Hike
The most *romantic* way to get to the top of Volcan Baru is to hike. This is a 27km round trip hike – 13km each way. Most hikers start this hike in the middle of the night to make it to the top for sunrise.
While it’s possible to hike this solo, it’s certainly not recommended. I can tell you from experience that hiking this in the dead of night alone would be very creepy. It’s very dark, it’s all misty, and there could be animals lurking in the shadows (it is a jungle after all).
I recommend hiking with friends or booking a Volcan Baru hiking tour. While I did not personally do this hike (I took a 4×4 to the top), I can wholeheartedly recommend Boquete Outdoor Adventures for your trip.

Volcan Baru Jeep 4×4 Tour
To summit Volcan Baru, Garrett and I booked an excursion with Boquete Outdoor Adventures. They picked us up from our hotel at 3:30am, loaded us up in a very sturdy 4×4 jeep, and then blasted AC/DC music to the top. It was a VERY bumpy ride for almost 2 hours.
Then, when they were there, they took us around to the facilities, helped us get great photos, led us to different peaks, and fed us coffee. Afterwards, they took us to a gorgeous jungle resort where we had a beautiful breakfast and lots and lots of espresso.
We even saw a Quetzal bird at the resort!
Our guides were so nice and helpful. This was an incredible tour and I can’t recommend it enough.
👉 Note: Only certified 4×4 Jeeps and drivers can attempt to climb Volcan Baru. No private vehicles are allowed to enter.
Tips for Visiting Volcan Baru
Wear Warm Clothing
Like I said earlier, Volcan Baru is almost 12,000 feet up in the sky. That, coupled with the fact that getting there for sunrise is the best time to experience the volcano, means that it’s super cold.
I recommend wearing layers that you can put on and take off as the temperature changes. I personally wore a zip-up hoodie over a tshirt and these hiking pants. I was still a little chilly. Bring light mittens too if you can.
Know There Will be Reduced Levels of Oxygen
Oxygen levels at the top of Baru are much lower than you’ll be used to. Again, this is because the top of the volcano is just so high up.
I absolutely felt the air thin as climbed higher. Then, at the top, I felt extra woozy as I tried to walk around. Ultimately, I was perfectly okay, but take it easy if you’re feeling faint or short of breath.
Drinking a lot of water also helps, as you get dehydrated faster the higher you go.
Bring Everything You Need for the Day
Once you leave your hotel for your trip, there’s really nowhere to get supplies. There are no shops at Volcan Baru and nowhere to buy snacks or water.
Of course, if you book with a tour (as I did) they’ll have water and food on hand for you. Still, make sure you read the packing list below and bring everything on it.
Prepare for Limited Facilities
Maybe you’re wondering (or maybe you’re not lol), “Where do I go to the bathroom on Volcan Baru?”
Well, there are toilets, so never fear. But they’re super basic and as part of a hiking lodge at the top of the volcano. I had to walk through a room full of bunk beds and a kitchen to use the loo.
There are no bathrooms on the trail up and no port-a-potties or anything similar at the top.
Get There for Sunrise
By far, the best time to get to the top of Baru is sunrise. If you take a tour, they’ll pick you up around 3:30am to account for this. But, if you hike, you’re going to want to time your hike accordingly.
I saw many people hiking up and down at all hours. But to see the sun rise over the horizon from atop a volcano is such a special experience.
What to Pack for Volcan Baru
👕Clothing: To stay comfortable, I recommend packing layers. I wore a zip up sweater, a moisture-wicking t-shirt, and these exact hiking pants. Additionally, if you can, I recommend bringing light mittens and a toque (beanie).
🥾 For Hikers: If you’re hiking up Volcan Baru, I recommend wearing really sturdy hiking boots. Additionally, you’ll want packable hiking poles.
✈️ Travel Essentials: When I travel, I never leave my Grayl Water Purifier at home. It’s a must for countries where the water might be iffy. But I recommend bringing another empty water bottle to keep you hydrated. You’ll also want sunglasses, a hat, and snacks.
